Dentistry Major at Beirut Arab University – BAU
A five-year full-time curriculum leading to a Bachelor Degree in Oral and Dental Surgery that meet the licensing conditions prescribed by the Lebanese Ministries of Health and Education.
The Faculty of Dentistry at BAU is now one of the largest dental schools in Lebanon. Not only does it graduate approximately 40 qualified dentists each year, but it also educates specialists in Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontology, Endodontics, Prosthodontics, Oral Surgery and Operative and Esthetic Dentistry, under the direct supervision of well recognized academic staff. The Faculty of Dentistry also provides future teachers of Dentistry to Universities across the region through its M.Sc. and PhD programs.
Dentists are medical healthcare professionals who focus specifically on the oral and dental hygiene of their patients.
What do dentists do?
As a dentist, you will typically be examining the dental and oral hygiene of patients, and either offering advice, or carrying out surgeries. Other tasks may include:
operating technical equipment such as X-ray machines
- keeping an accurate record of a patient’s dental structure (which may need to be used to identify an individual)
- keeping up-to-date with developments in dentistry
- working with a medical nurse and a medical receptionist
- continuing training and specializing
You may be required to work some overtime and weekend slots, but hours tend to be a lot more regular than those of medical doctors.

The job duties of a dentist include
- Evaluate the current health and condition of their patient’s teeth to determine diagnosis of dental condition, if any
- Inform their patients on how to prevent dental problems and keep their teeth and mouth as healthy as possible
- Complete treatment on affected gums, decayed and fractured teeth, and perform tooth removal for cases where there are high levels of decay
- Consider treatment methods and explain the options with the patient to determine which works best for them based on their situation
- Keep all equipment functional and clean
- Maintain dental files for all patients
- Monitor and evaluate any x-ray images for any part of the patient’s oral cavity
- Refer patients to orthodontists or other dental specialist for more advanced procedures and care.
